(FNA)- Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro voiced support for Iran's proposal to set up a committee to be comprised of Iran, Venezuela and Egypt to soothe the vexed Syrian crisis, and underscored Iran's significant role in international equations.

First of all, big powers should understand that they have to stop meddling in the internal affairs of countries and let peace, tranquility and independence prevail the world, Maduro told reporters upon arrival in Tehran to attend a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Maduro, who is also a special envoy of the Venezuelan president to the NAM Summit, approved of the proposal for setting up a contact group on Syria, and said it will allow the regional countries to stop the interventions of alien countries.

He said the proposal will also help Syria attain real peace.

He further asserted that the meeting had a historic significance since a hard working and peace loving nation is hosting it.

He said the summit is very important for the world nations because it is related to such issues as peace and independence of nations.

The envoy also said the 120 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement are all working towards developing independence.

Saying that he is carrying the warm greetings of both his nation and government to Iranians, he said the Iranian nation has been working hard to safeguard its Islamic Revolution.

He hoped the ongoing NAM meeting in Tehran would be fruitful.

Deputy foreign ministers and experts from the NAM member states started a meeting here in the Iranian capital on Sunday.

The meeting held at the International Conference Hall of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Broadcasting (IRIB) lasted for two days (August 26-27).

The meeting drew up the agenda for the 16th heads-of-state summit meeting of the bloc to be held in the Iranian capital on Thursday.

The experts meeting is followed by the NAM's foreign ministers meeting on August 28-29. The heads-of-state summit of the bloc has been arranged for the two following days.

Iran assumed the rotating presidency of the movement from Egypt for three years during the Sunday meeting.
