Iran Reiterates Support for President Assad’s Reforms
(FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian reiterated Iran's support for President Bashar al-Assad's reform plans and the Syrian nation's stance, and expressed confidence over the success of the Syrian nation in defeating terrorist groups and insurgents.
"We are absolutely sure that Syria will get out of the current crisis with its head held high and will remain in the resistance front against the Zionist regime (of Israel)," Amir Abdollahian said during a meeting with the Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday.
The Lebanese prime minister, for his part, underlined Iran's essential role in resolving regional issues and the Syrian crisis, in particular, and said, "…we hope that the people of Syria would be able to pass through this stage with the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the political plans that are presented for this purpose."
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police forces and border guards being reported across the country.
Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.
The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
In October 2011, calm was eventually restored in the Arab state after President Assad started a reform initiative in the country, but Israel, the US and its Arab allies are seeking hard to bring the country into chaos through any possible means. Tel Aviv, Washington and some Arab capitals have been staging various plots in the hope of increasing unrests in Syria.
