Tehran’s Daily Newspaper Review
Yesterday was the anniversary of the 19th of Dey 1356 (January 9th, 1978): the day when an offensive editorial against Ayatollah Khomeini published in Ettela’at newspaper infuriated supporters of the ayatollah in the holy city of Qom. The monarchy’s heavy-handed response to an Islamists’ gathering triggered a chain of demonstrations that eventually led to the fall of the Pahlavi regime. In Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei called leaders of the 2009 post-election protests ‘puppets’ of foreign countries. Snow finally came to Tehran after a sterile autumn. Last night another airplane from Iran’s decrepit fleet crashed near the city of Urmia, in northwestern Iran, with at least 70 fatalities reported so far.
