Forget Ayatollah Khomeini’s famous quote: “Majles dar ra’se omur ast” (pragmatically translated as: “Majles has primary authority over the (country’s) affairs”): Ahmadinejad rejected the notion in his interview with Iran daily, the government’s official organ, on Saturday, saying that the Islamic Republic founder’s quote related to the days Iran was governed through a parliamentary system (up to 1989). The president’s remarks have infuriated his archcritics in Majles, particularly Tehran MPs Ali Motahhari and Ahmad Tavakolli. Thirty–first of Shahrivar, 22nd of September, marks the start of Sacred Defense week, the day Iraqi jet fighters attacked civilian Mehrabad Airport in Tehran and Saddam Hussein waged a bloody 8-year war on Iran, which left both sides with hundreds of thousands of casualties and severe economic and geopolitical loss.
