Tehran’s newspapers on Tuesday, Tir 15, 1389 (June 6, 2010).
The challenge between Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution and Azad University –deep in a battle between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani- will most probably die down for a while, as Iran’s Supreme Leader has decreed a freeze on both sides’ tactical moves, namely Azad University’s decision to endow its assets –and thus keep it immune from government access- and the Supreme Council’s decision to appoint a new president for the institution.

The new charter of Islamic Azad University adopted by Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution –chaired by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad- would pave the way for the appointment of a new president for Azad University, in place of its current Hashemi Rafsanjani-backed head, Abdullah Jasbi, who has run the academic institution for nearly three decades.

Hamshahri is the official daily newspaper of Tehran’s Municipality. Its general directions in politics, culture and economy are determined by the mayor of Tehran, currently Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
Kayhan is a hard-line conservative newspaper. Its editor-in-chief –currently Hossein Shari’atmadari- is appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader. Shari’atmadari’s editorials often spark off controversy and debate inside Iranian political circles.
Resalat belongs to the moderate wing of the principlist camp. Resalat’s best known anlayst is Amir Mohebbian, its political editor.
Tehran-e Emrooz is a ‘principlist reformist’ newspaper, connected to Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
Shargh is a moderate reformist newspaper. It was the most popular and influential reformist newspaper in its first period of publication which lasted from August 2003 until September 2006.
Vatan-e Emrooz -which started its publication in November 2008-, belongs to Mehrdad Bazrpash, the thirty-year old pro-Ahmadinejad politician who is also head of Iran’s second largest auto manufacturer company, Saipa. Vatan-e Emrooz is a supporter of the president’s policies.
