Purple for Participation
The courageous turnout of Iraqis in parliamentary election should be rewarded in best way possible. By Abdul-Latif el-Ubaidi
Purple ink recorded new masterpiece of the Iraqi nation and proved they are still alive and determined to build their own future. Where else in the world can you find people who show a million-strong epic participation in defiance of suicide bombings, car blasts, life threats and despite the inefficiency of officials? Compare Iraq’s 65% participation to the twenty-nine percent France witnessed in the last regional poll when comparison of France and Iraq in terms of stability, security and economic welfare is not even reasonable.
The Iraqis are aware that it was courage of the religious leadership and its demand from people active participation in the election that brought victory to the nation. This election forms the future of Iraq and protects the accomplishments of the Iraqi nation despite their ethnic affiliations and regardless of who wins majority in the parliament. We should be thankful that despite all hostile efforts, particularly billions of dollars spent by some regional forces, those who really aim to serve the nation won the election.
All efforts made to return the Baath Party back to power, guised in nationalistic slogans, just failed. Parties which used all possible means, including provocation of religious and national sentiments and spending billions of dollars of illegitimate revenues gained during Saddam’s era, spread barefaced lies via pan-Arab media to approach the power circles, undermine achievements of the Iraqi nation and seize power once again.
However, both Islamist Sunni and pan-Arab parties which aimed to re-impose the disastrous doctrines of the Baath Party on the Iraqi nation were defeated in this election. With the mission accomplished and a glorious election held, the question is all about the next step. The ball is now in winner parties’ court. Dreams of the Iraqi nation should be realized whatever it takes. Members of the parliament are chosen to serve the nation and bring it welfare.
Iraq is a wealthy country if we know about its resources. Released from the sectarian attitude of the age of Saddam Hussein, now we have the opportunity to serve the Iraqis. No more excuses and lethargy will be accepted. Corrupt officials no longer have a position in the power while terrorism should also come to its end. The Iraqi nation will move on and reject those who are against progress of the country.
