Iraqi PM says Iran, Iraq taking steps on same path
Mashhad, IRNA – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said on Wednesday that his country and the neighboring Iran are on the same path, taking steps along with each other.
The best example of this, he added, is the joint efforts made by the martyred top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, and Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) in defeating the Daesh terror group and restoring the security of Iraq.
The Iraqi premier made the comments during a meeting with Ahmad Marvi, the superintendent of Imam Reza’s holy shrine in the Iranian city of Mashhad.
Al-Sudani said that Lieutenant General Soleimani and PMU Commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis – both assassinated in a US drone attack in Baghdad in January 2020 – helped strengthened ties between Iran and Iraq.
The Iranian cleric, on his part, described the relations between the two countries as friendly and brotherly that will never break, despite enemies’ plots to create divisions between the two nations.
The Iraqi prime minister visited Mashhad on Wednesday, a day after he arrived in the capital Tehran for a two-day stay.
In Tehran, he was received by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
Al-Sudani also met with President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials.
The visit to Iran was the first by al-Sudani to a non-Arab country since he became Iraq’s prime minister in late October 2022.
