Tehran, Baku Moving Toward Deeper Relations
The establishment of peace and security with our neighbors has always been one of the most important issues which has been reiterated by the previous and present administrations; the Southern Caucasus region which covers Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia has been one of the most significant regions in Iranian diplomacy. This region is important especially in the areas of safe transport, pipeline passages and energy pathways. Furthermore, the establishment of security in this region is one of our top priorities. Iran has always welcomed peace and made attempts to mediate between the countries of the region and other countries in this regard. For example, last year, Iran mediated between the government of Tajikistan and opposition groups, thus, the Southern Caucasus region has its own sensitivities which has led to numerous visits by high-ranking Iranian officials. Recently, Mr. Zarif, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, made a visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan and the expansion of relations between the two countries was stressed in his meeting with the Azeri President.
Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have deep historical and religious roots. The majority of the people of Azerbaijan are Shiites and their love for the Prophet’s family creates religious bonds. On the other hand, historical and cultural bonds between the two countries and also cultural similarities between the people of Iran and Azerbaijan strengthen these relations.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has always believed in establishing balanced relations with all countries of the region especially the neighboring countries. It is certain that the existence of disputes in the region would be to no country’s benefit. With regard to the dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Karabakh, the Islamic Republic of Iran has made great efforts to resolve this issue through dialogue and using international paths particularly the Minsk Group. The Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal is to mediate in order to find a just and fair solution between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Of course the influence of the Zionist regime during the past years in the Southern Caucasus region must be pointed out. But this influence has been isolated by the activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran to bring awareness to the people of this region and give the necessary warnings. Considering the active diplomacy of the 11th administration and the Foreign Ministry, all efforts made by the Zionist regime to spread Iranophobia among the people of the region have proven futile.
The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that there are numerous capacities in the path of the expansion of relations between Iran and Azerbaijan especially in the areas of transport, energy and scientific and cultural exchanges. The Islamic Republic of Iran could fulfill the scientific and technological needs of its neighbors. On the other hand, good cooperation could prepare the ground for the presence of businessmen and merchants of both countries in economic fields.
