Capacity of Zarif’s Visit to Saudi Arabia Must Be Used
Will there be any change in Saudi Arabia’s policies towards Iran and other regional issues after the demise of King Abdullah and the coming to power of the new King?
No position was taken by King Abdullah upon which his views on domestic and foreign policies could be analyzed. Therefore, one cannot accurately make a statement in this regard. But I believe that the Saudis will pursue their past policies. In general, Saudi Arabia must reach the conclusion that some of its policies in the region have not been correct. For example, Saudi Arabia was among the main supporters of ISIS, but as time passed, they realized that their policy was wrong and stopped their support and they have now joined the western coalition. I am almost certain that they will reach the conclusion that their policies with regard to other issues were also incorrect, thus, there is the possibility of change in policies.
Mr. Zarif is supposed to attend the funeral ceremonies. Could this visit open the path to end the current cold relations?
I believe that this visit is a positive step. Usually, such visits which are not political and are mainly based on ethical and humanitarian issues create opportunities in foreign policy. These capacities are mainly used to prepare the ground for future political measures. Considering the fact that Saud-al-Faisal had previously sent an invitation for Mr. Zarif, his presence in the funeral ceremony would indicate Iran’s intention to improve its relations with Saudi Arabia. These messages and measures could have positive impacts on the other party.
Could this visit be another excuse for the Foreign Ministry’s critics to express their criticism?
The Foreign Ministry must fulfill its responsibilities and act according to the national interests of the country. The Foreign Ministry must pursue its own path despite the criticisms of its critics. The fact is that the expansion of relations between the two Muslim countries is in the interest of the world of Islam and steps must be taken in this regard.
