No Proposal Received for Amir Hekmati’s Swap with Iranian Inmates in US
(FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham dismissed media reports that Tehran had received a proposal from Washington on swapping ex-US marine Amir Hekmati with Iranian detainees in US jails.
"We have received no official demand in this regard," Afkham told reporters in Tehran on Wednesday.
She, meantime, said that a number of 15 Iranians are jailed in the US under the pretext of violating sanctions against Iran and some 70 others who are also imprisoned there under baseless pretexts are kept under inhumane conditions .
Stressing that the government in Tehran is seriously pursuing the case with imprisoned Iranians in other countries, Afkham expressed the hope that the Iranian citizens who are in the US jails for baseless claims and for alleged violation of the sanctions would be freed soon.
Hekmati, 31, was arrested in 2011 and sentenced to death for spying. The US denies he’s a spy.
He appealed and received a 10-year sentence for “cooperating with hostile governments”.
Hekmati, who claims to be an ex-marine, has been serving the US army in Iraq and Afghanistan.
