Iran to keep supporting Iraq stability: Top MP
A senior Iranian lawmaker says Iran will continue to support political stability in Iraq whose administration has been handed over to new Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
“The Islamic Republic [of Iran] has always held in high regard Iraq's internal decisions and always supports the view of Iraqi people,” Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of Iranian Majlis' National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Saturday.
Boroujerdi also said al-Abadi has won unanimity of Iraqi political groups to form a new government.
Last week, Iraq’s new President Fouad Massoum appointed the deputy parliament speaker, Abadi, to form the new government. Abadi was given 30 days to form the next government and present it to parliament for approval.
“Iran wants political stability in Iraq” so that security would improve in this country, the Iranian MP said, adding that “Iraq could inflict a crushing defeat on Takfiri ISIL terrorists" by forming a "united and cohesive government" and "restricting" its army.
On July 24, the main Kurdish blocs in Iraqi parliament picked veteran politician Massoum as the country's president. The Iraqi lawmakers also on July 15 elected Salim al-Jabouri, a well-known moderate Sunni politician, as the country’s new parliament speaker.
Under a de facto agreement among communities in Iraq, the prime minister is a Shia Arab, the president a Kurd, and the parliament speaker a Sunni Arab.
Iraq has been fighting ISIL Takfiri terrorists since they took control of the city of Mosul on June 10. Tribal fighters have joined the Iraqi army in the battle against the terrorists.
