Iran Condemns Recent Bombing in Baghdad
(FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham on Saturday strongly condemned the recent violence in Iraq, specially the yesterday bombing which resulted in the death of a large number of people in the Muslim country’s capital, Baghdad.
"The terrorists have expanded the scope of their inhuman actions in Iraq by misusing the situation in the region and also by misusing the performance and double-standard approach of certain countries towards terrorism and extremism," Afkham told reporters today.
She further pointed to the goal of such attacks, and said the terrorists intend to disrupt the trend of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq.
Afkham expressed the hope that the path of the establishment of security and stability as well as development will be paved in Iraq with firmness and national unity and without any disruption.
On Friday, suicide bombers killed at least 30 people at a Baghdad sports stadium hosting a pre-election campaign rally attended by thousands of supporters of a Shiite group.
An al-Qaeda-linked group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), claimed responsibility for the attack at the Industrial Stadium in Eastern Baghdad.
Bombings and other attacks killed almost 8,000 civilians in Iraq in 2013, the worst period for the country since 2008.
The ISIL, which is in charge of a major part of terrorist operations in Syria as well, has been behind many of the bombings. The Iraqi government has been battling the militant group in the Western province of Anbar, where the group held territory in the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi.
