Hope for the Future of the Non-Aligned Movement
-Despite the existing crisis in the region, we should hope that the NAM Summit will have rather positive results for improvement of conditions, especially the situation in Syria.
-This movement was able to help greatly in the eradication of colonization.
-Until today, members of NAM have not achieved great results from summits which have been held and, like the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, have only issued resolutions. Issues that are raised in resolutions can be proposed in the United Nations and this movement with regard to the eradication of colonization and or political issues which are discussed in the NAM Summit can follow them in the UN; but the movement by itself has no structure to follow the issues and until now has shown that it has not been able to play an important role in the international arena.
-This movement has the possibility to pursue economic issues in the UN and with regard to eradication of colonization, whose actions are conducted by a 24 member committee, has been successful; therefore, in this regard, they have been 100% successful; but in relation to economic issues, despite consecutive resolutions, there are still gaps between rich and poor countries; of course, some of the developing countries like Brazil, China, and Singapore have brought themselves out of the circle of poor countries.
-Countries like China and India that are growing fast and out of the circle of needy countries no longer care much about the issues of this movement and try to become members of the G20 or G8 and, therefore, completely change their positions.
-In the same path, India signed the 1970 pact with Russia and Iraq signed the 1972 security pact with this country; Nevertheless, we should welcome any meeting or summit which can help, in any way, the member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement; for it is possible that the same institution which until today has not been able to use all its power, under certain conditions, could propose an issue which is both acceptable to the western countries and would improve their situations.
-Presently, decisions made by NAM have solely been mentioned in resolutions; but unfortunately there is no executive guarantee for acting upon the resolutions of these summits and the only place where these resolutions can be followed is within the framework of the United Nations and the General Assembly in which they are discussed in committees.
-When a crisis exists in the region, such a summit can issue a resolution or make a decision which is somehow acceptable even for the opposition; that is why, under these conditions, any gathering, with all negative views which might exist about it, can be expected to have relatively positive results and help solve problems like the situation in Syria.
