Tehran Commemorates the 1979 Islamic Revolution

The 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, an uprising led by Ayatollah Khomeini which put an end to 25 centuries of monarchy in Iran, was commemorated across Iran on Saturday. As is the convention, the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the anniversary's speech. He attacked archenemy Israel in his speech, likening it to a "dilapidated car", advising the US leaders not to tie their own interests to the Jewish state anymore.

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani made a cameo appearance in the rally in Tehran. Iranian websites reported that a number of demonstrators have chanted slogans against Hashemi, a man who has turned into a pariah following the 2009 presidential elections. Nonetheless, as renowned Reformist journalist Mohammad Ghouchani said once, "Hashemi regards the Islamic Republic as his child, and will do anything to protect it from any harm."
